Virginia Permit Test 2026

The Virginia permit test has 35 questions — a 10-question road-sign section and a 25-question general-knowledge section, based on the official Virginia driver handbook. Every practice question on this site is written to reflect that same format and content — not copied from the real Virginia DMV exam.

To pass, you need a perfect score on the 10 road-sign questions, plus 20 of 25 correct (80%) on the general-knowledge section. That's the standard the Virginia DMV uses to score the written knowledge test.

The passing score is a perfect score on the 10 road-sign questions, plus 20 of 25 correct (80%) on the general-knowledge section. If you don't pass, applicants under 18 must wait 15 full days before retesting; applicants 18 and older can retest the next business day.

If you’re under 18, Virginia law requires a full 15-day wait before you can retake the exam. If you’re 18 or older, you can retest as soon as the next business day. After three failures at any age, you must complete classroom driver education before a fourth attempt.

You must be at least 15 years and 6 months old to apply for a Virginia learner’s permit.

You’ll need proof of identity and Virginia residency, and if you’re under 18, a parent or guardian’s signature. The road-sign section requires a perfect score to pass.
